LEARNING OUTCOMES

This assessment task relates to ALL of the learning outcomes for Theme 5: Histology lectures & laboratory as follows:

  • Gain an understanding of the cellular structure , classification, and function of the four primary tissue types (functional histology):
  • Be able to identify key structures in light- and electron-micrographs

    • Epithelium
    • Connective tissue
    • Muscle
    • Nervous

  • Outline how the 4 primary tissue types combine to form organs and a complete organism.
  • Describe how the function of the small intestine is related to the tissue and cell types of which it is composed
  • Demonstrate laboratory skills including using light microscopy to investigate a mammalian histological specimen

TASK

Your task is to make a 4-minute video recording of you navigating a virtual slide of mammalian duodenum

What to include:

Using your mouse-/pointer on the designated virtual slide, describe:

Where the EPITHELIUM is located, the approximate location of the BASEMENT MEMBRANE, and the APICAL surface of the epithelial cells

Classify the EPITHELIUM in your specimen

Discuss the role of INTERCELLULAR JUNCTIONS in epithelium and their function, pointing to relevant section of the slide in your explanation where appropriate

Where the CONNECTIVE TISSUE is located in the Mucosa

Where the CONNECTIVE TISSUE is located in the Submucosa

Where the CONNECTIVE TISSUE is located in the Muscularis externa

Where the CONNECTIVE TISSUE is located in the Serosa  (even if you cant see it in your virtual slide, show where it should be)

Where the MUSCLE is in the Mucosa, including the type of muscle, and its specific name

Where the MUSCLE is in the Muscularis Externa, including the type of muscle, and the specific arrangement of this muscle

Where the NERVOUS TISSUE would be located (approximately) in the Mucosa, Submucosa, Muscularis Externa and Serosa

General Requirements:

  • You must use the virtual slide provided in the link above (DUODENUM) (or you will receive 0)
  • You should use whichever magnification best details what you are trying to show - eg we recommend at least 10% magnification and 100% magnification

  • Some students may prefer to take snapshots and annotate these, and create a video using multiple of these OR some students may like to record "live" video zooming in and out of the virtual slide - either way is acceptable

  • 4 mins +/- 10% (you can go under 4 min if you want, just not over 4:24min)

  • Audio and video must be included (we suggest zoom recording while sharing your screen)
  • You MUST APPEAR  appear live for the duration of your video (eg you can record yourself via zoom where your face is in the video)
  • References are not required for this video task - use the available resources on the resources page of this assessment task
  • Labels can be included only if you wish (however students MUST use a mouse or pointer when describing everything in table above)
  • Convert file to mp4 or upload via Panopto

To obtain 7 marks allocated for meeting the general requirements of this task, your video will need to be within the stated time limit, be live and present for the duration of the video & include audio AND video  7 marks

When calculating Surface Area to Volume ratios (SA:V), the following formulas are used:

Sphere:

    • Surface area = 4πr2
    • Volume = 4/3πr3
    • Where π = 3.14 and r = radius of the sphere
Cube:

    • Surface area = 6 x (length x depth)
    • Volume = length x depth x height

You have been given two cell samples:

    • Cell A is a spherical cell with a radius of 1.5 µm.
    • Cell B is a cube-shaped cell with a length, depth, and height of 2 µm.

a) What is the SA:V of Cell A?

: 1

Input numerical answer to one decimal place.

b) What is the SA:V of Cell B?

: 1

Input numerical answer to one decimal place.

c) Based on the above calculations, which cell (A or B) would most efficiently transport substances across the cell membrane?
