                                                                  A NEW “ZERO-CARBON” CITY PROJECT

        A desert is not the first location that comes to mind when you think of an eco-friendly

city. The desert sands of Abu Dhabi, part of the United Arab Emirates, seem an unbelievable

place to build a sustainable city. Despite the fact that it is one of the largest oil producers in the

world, a new eco-city is being built there. It will exist without having negative effects on the

surroundings.                   Masdar City project will cost $22 billion to build and will use many different forms of

energy, including solar and wind. The first part of this project is the construction of one of the

largest solar energy factories in the world. This plant will produce most of the energy for the

whole area. When the city is finished, it will be the home to more than 50,000 people. 

         Masdar City will not damage the environment. First, there will be no cars running within

the city’s walls. It will be surrounded by walls to prevent noise and dust from entering. The

city is going to be a community where people can live, work and play in an eco-sound

environment. Second, recycling is a top priority to the development of the city. Even in the

construction process, recycled materials will be used. What is more, water will be recycled and

used again and again; for example, in the irrigation of crops. 

        Many people and companies from different countries are interested in the project. The

prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology has opened a branch of its college in the

city, the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. It recruits the best students from around

the world to do research in the area of alternative energy. Moreover, companies, such as

General Electric in the USA and SunTech, a Chinese solar panel manufacturer, have joined to

make Masdar a reality. This has turned into a truly global project. 

     Masdar City has become a pioneer in creating a green community. Initiated in 2008, this

project was planned to grow new technologies and reduce the environmental impact of human

activity. Its realisation would send a big signal to other nations. It might become an influential

model for other cities that are ready to take action against environmental challenges. Even if

the city is still under construction, it has already gained international attention due to its

ecological approach. Masdar City is expected to be built until 2030. It will work as an ideal

place to develop different businesses. As a result, living in Masdar City can be both practical

and attractive. It will be the world’s first “zero-carbon” city, meaning the amount of CO2

released into the air will be close to zero.
