Skill Practice - Fixed Appliances

Objective

To install and connect various electrotechnology apparatus using a range of electrotechnology tools and equipment.

At the completion this practical exercise you should be able to:

  • Observe correct circuit isolation procedures when working with electrical equipment.
  • Select and inspect electrical equipment to ensure it is suitable for installation.
  • Select and inspect electrical tools and equipment are safe and suitable for use.
  • Install equipment according to plan supplied and to manufactures directions.
  • Ensure installed equipment complies with Australian standards.
  • Connect an electrical circuit using a circuit diagram as a guide

Task

For this skill practice :

  • Install the equipment as shown on the diagram
Cook-top

  • Read AS/NZS 3000 clause 4.7
  • A cooking appliance having an open cooking surface shall be provided with a switch,

operating in all active conductors, mounted near the appliance in a

visible and readily accessible position and shall be marked to identify the appliance controlled. what is the minimum side clearance if the switch is to be mounted on the wall behind  the appliance?

    mm.

  • The cook-top is rated at 8.2kW and its supply cable is to be installed partially surrounded in thermal insulation, look up AS3000 table C5 and C6 to determine the correct cable size.
Hot water system

  • Does a fixed wired hot water system require an isolating switch?
    . Clause
  • The hot water system is rated at 4.8 kW, 240 V. Using I = P/U determine the load current and select the correct size cable to install if the cable is installed partially surrounded by thermal insulation.
