baseball is believed to be a North American development of rounders. The game

was brought over from the UK to Canada and the United States by immigrants. The

first known American reference to baseball appears in a 1786 diary entry by a

Princeton student. By the 1830s-50s, many amateur clubs played baseball.

Baseball went through a major transformation

when Alexander Joy Cartwright established a new set of rules for the game that

is closer to the modern game of baseball. The first recorded baseball game was

held in 1846 between the Knickerbockers and a group of cricket players. In 1876

the first professional baseball league, the National Association of

Professional Baseball Players (also called the National League or NL), was

established. The American League (AL or American League of Professional Base

Ball Players) was formed in 1901. These leagues merged in 2000 to form Major

League Baseball or MLB.
